This is the final blog in a three part series on Positivity. The first one outlined the benefits of having a high ratio of positive emotional experiences compared to negative ones, which are: 1.) Enhanced Performance, 2.) More Fulfillment and Satisfaction, and 3.) Better Health. Next, we looked at ways to decrease the negative emotional experiences you have in life.
This blog will focus on maximizing your Positivity Ratio by increasing your positive emotional experiences – as per the book Positivity by Dr. Barbara Fredrickson. Here is a list of things you can do to add to your Positivity Toolkit:
*Savor the good things you have in life. Whether it is a great bowl of gazpacho, a beautiful sunset, or a heart-felt conversation with a long-time friend – take your time to really enjoy and appreciate the good things in your life. Learn more about savoring here.
*Cultivate High Quality Relationships. We know that special relationships with family and friends are one of the most important things in our lives. Be intentional about scheduling time with those you care about and really connect with them when you are together.
*Ritualize Gratitude. Take at least a few minutes every day – maybe first thing in the morning – to remind yourself of the things you are most grateful for in life; make a quick list if you have time. Take it a step further and think of people who have touched your life most in a positive way. Write a letter to some of them to express your thanks.
*Reverse Bucket List. Instead of making a list of things you want to do, make a list of the top things you have already done in life that were so fun and inspiring. More about the Reverse Bucket List here.
*Leverage Your Natural Strengths in Your Work. The Gallup Organization has done extensive research that shows how much more successful and fulfilled we are when we are able to use our natural talents at work. Check this blog and this other one for more info.
*Mindful Meditation – aka “Brain Training.” If you have tried meditating before and failed, then join the club. Check out this blog to learn how to do it differently and to learn how World Cup and Super Bowl Champions have used it to their advantage.
You can read even more ideas in the book, Positivity, as well as The Mayo Clinic Handbook for Happiness – both recommended.
Increasing your Positivity Ratio can have a profound impact on your Performance, Fulfillment in Life, and Health. I encourage you to experiment with the ideas in this three blog series to have an even more Positive Life and maximize your personal Mission Impact.
